  General Cargo Transporation
NSCSA has grown from operating 4 fully-owned vessels in 1983 to managing 4 subsidiaries and owning 17 VLCC's, 13 chemical tankers, and 4 multi-purpose vessels, and has signed contracts for 16 chemical carrier new buildings to be available during 2010-2012. In addition to commercial trade lanes between North America and the Middle East, NSCSA also does business in India, Pakistan and Italy and has, since 1986, been a leader in the transport of bulk petroleum and chemicals. In 1991, NSCSA established a fully owned subsidiary, NSCSA (America) Inc., to act as a general agent for the company's liner service which has been headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland for the past 18 years.

NSCSA's liner division carries full containers, roll-on roll-off and project cargo from U.S. east and gulf coast ports and Canada to Jeddah, Dammam, Dubai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Port Qasim. But the company views itself as a niche carrier specializing in "underdeck" business, which consists of RoRo and project cargoes.

The four RoRo vessels employed by NSCSA's liner division are the company "work-horses." Each of the four ships boasts a specially designed ramp that can hold 400 metric tons; one of the largest ramp capacities currently in use. This allows the carrier to accommodate a wide variety of cargoes under deck in all shapes and sizes, whether self-propelled or towable; or high, wide or heavy static parcels which require relatively little handling.

Project freight bound for the Middle East is a specialty of NSCSA and contributes to the U.S.-Middle East commercial relationship. Project cargo can include gas and oil exploration machinery, equipment for desalinization plants and apparatus for the construction of sub-electric stations.

Project cargo liner service is a complex business requiring continual commercial presence in the market; specialized ships, an extensive operations and vendor network, and highly trained staff and crew. Although primarily known as a niche carrier, the NSCSA Liner Service has always been faced with strong competition from larger, more efficient shipping carriers with operations much broader in scope than NSCSA, and with bigger and more modern fleets.

In light of this ever-increasing competition, NSCSA continues to remain competitive, due in no small part, to excellent and personalized customer service; i.e; frequent sailings, competitive rates and effective equipment and intermodal resources; prompt, courteous and accurate "back-room" services such as documentation, billing and accounts payables/receivable processing; and timely regional adjustments to market trends and customer needs.

In 2003, management of the liner operations world-wide shifted to NSCSA (America) Inc. in Baltimore. This resulted in all operations/cargo/port functions for the Liner Service for North America, the Middle East, Mediterranean, and the ISC moving to North America from the Corporate Office. Centralization of the pricing and marketing functions to North America has significantly streamlined the rate quotation and market analysis processes for the Liner Service, thereby allowing faster rate responses, more-competitive service rates and timelier market/customer adjustments in the container, Breakbulk and RoRo markets.
